O-1 (Oil-hardening) tool steel is a general-purpose tool steel with excellent wear resistance, good machinability, and high dimensional stability during hardening. It is part of the cold work tool steel family and is ideal for applications that require a tough, durable edge.
O-1 tool steel is a cold-work, oil-hardening steel that is part of the O-series (Oil-hardening) of tool steels. It’s known for its superior dimensional stability, wear resistance, and edge retention, making it an ideal choice for tools that require precision shaping and long-lasting performance. Because of its high carbon content and presence of manganese and chromium, O-1 steel offers a great balance between toughness and hardness.
O-1 steel is hardened by heating to around 1450–1500°F (790–815°C) and then quenched in oil. It achieves a hardness of Rockwell C 57–62 after proper heat treatment. It can also be tempered to adjust hardness based on the application.
We supply cut-to-size O-1 tool steel to meet your specific manufacturing or die-making needs. Whether you’re building a forming die or precision gauge, we can custom-cut your steel and ship it ready for machining or heat treatment.
